    1.The City Before the Shows

Lorelai woke up with the lamp still on.The hotel room looked as if someone had unpacked in a hurry and then changed her mind twice.A black skirt hung over the chair. Her press badge was on the floor near one shoe.Freya’s hairpins were scattered by the sink, though Freya insisted she had put them “in one place.”

The first show was not until ten,but fashion week mornings never respected the clock.By half past seven,Freya already had messages from backstage. One model was late. One belt had not arrived. One assistant was asking for a photo of a coat that everyone had seen yesterday and nobody could now describe properly.

Freya read the messages with one eye half closed.“I hate everyone before breakfast.”

“You say that every season,”Lorelai said.

    “And every season,I am correct.”

Lorelai worked as a freelance fashion writer. She could dress slowly because her work began with looking.Freya worked backstage as a styling assistant. She dressed faster because someone always needed her before she had finished getting ready.

On the chair were two choices. One dark brown, more formal. One black, smaller, with a strap that did not twist easily.Lorelai stood over them for too long.Freya walked out of the bathroom with her coat half on and made the decision from the doorway.

    “Black.”

    “You didn’t even come closer.”

“I can see the problem from here.”

“The brown one has better leather.”

“The brown one makes your blouse look confused.”

Lorelai picked up the black one and hated that Freya was right. It looked cleaner with the skrit. It also looked less like she had planned the outfit three days earlier, which she had.

Outside, the hotel entrance had started to fill with drivers, assistants, and people wearing sunglasses before the sun had earned them.Someone downstairs dropped a garment bag in the lobby, and a woman in silver shoes stepped over it without slowing down.

Freya checked her phone again.“We need to leave.”

Lorelai looked for her press badge, then remembered it was on the floor. She bent down, clipped it around her neck, and nearly knocked over the brown bag.

Freya saw everything and said nothing, which was worse.

2.A Bag Before the First Show

Lorelai tried not to pack like a person afraid of the day.She put in her notebook, two pens, one press card,a folded invitation, and a lipstick she knew she would probably not use. Then she took out the second pen because the bag was not large, and because carrying too much always made her feel as if the outfit had lost an argument before she left the room.

The black bag sat close to her coat.It was not flashy. It did not need a speech. For the first show,Lorelai let women bag sit close to her coat;the black shape looked useful without asking for attention.

Freya reached past her for the hotel key card.“The strap is better.”

    “You keep saying that.”

    “Because it keeps being true.”

In the elevator, three more people joined them before the lobby.A model with wet hair held a pair of gold heels in one hand.A man in a long coat kept checking two phones.A young assistant hugged a garment cover to her chest and looked ready to cry if anyone asked her a question.

Nobody spoke. The elevator made a soft little jump between floors, and Lorelai watched the assistant tighten her grip on the hanger.

At the lobby door,Freya went first. She always did when work was waiting.Lorelai followed, fixing the cuff of her blouse as they stepped outside. The air felt colder than the room, and her shoes immediately reminded her that they had been chosen for photographs, not pavements.

Photographers were already near the first venue, but not in full chase mode yet. They stood with cameras low, talking to one another, pretending they were not scanning every car door.

Lorelai looked down once. The bag was fine. The shoes were a problem, but an expected one.

    Freya caught her glance.“Regret?”

    “Only from the ankle down.”

    “That’s manageable.”

A car pulled up too close to the curb.A guest stepped out, nearly caught her heel, then turned the stumble into a pose so fast that Lorelai almost respected it.Fashion week had started properly.

    3.Freya’s Backstage Discipline

Freya entered through the side door and lost Lorelai at once. The front of house had flowers,check-in desks, and guests with beautiful coats.Backstage had tape on the floor, racks too close together, and someone asking where the steamer had gone while standing beside it.

She found her section. The lineup cards had been taped to the rack, but two were curling at the corners.First look:long coat, black skirt, low heel.Second look:metallic dress, thin belt, small bag.Third look:gloves missing.Freya looked at the empty space beside the gloves label and breathed through her nose.

A junior assistant came over holding earrings in both palms.“Are these for look six or eight?”

    Freya checked once.“Eight.”

    “She said six.”

    “She said six yesterday.”

The assistant made the face people made when they learned yesterday no longer existed.

Freya moved the earrings herself. The room was already warming up.Makeup lights were bright, phones were ringing, and one model was eating toast in a way that made every stylist nearby look terrified for the clothes.

A model in look fourteen picked up the wrong bag and held it high, almost under her arm.Freya stepped in before anyone else saw it.

    “Lower.Not like you’re hiding it.”

The model lowered it too far.

“Not like you dropped it either.”

The model laughed and found the middle.Freya adjusted the handle by half an inch and backed away. The look settled. Not perfect.Perfect was rare backstage.Good was enough for a runway turn and a camera flash.

Someone shouted for the black gloves. They were found under a coat that did not belong to the same rack, which made no sense and therefore made complete sense.

Music tested through the wall.A deep beat, then silence, then a louder burst that made one makeup artist swear. The first model moved toward the curtain.Freya checked the rack again, though she had already checked it twice.

The show was about to look easy from the other side.

    4.The Homepage Before the Door

Earlier,in the hotel room,Lorelai and Freya had opened the laptop on the desk because the black bag had not won instantly. It had almost won,but Lorelai liked to see a choice one more time before closing the door.Freya had no patience for that, but she leaned over the screen anyway.

The homepage loaded while Freya searched for another hairpin. There were top-handle designs, soft shoulder styles, clean crossbody shapes, and evening bags that looked better on a screen than they probably would in a taxi.Lorelai clicked through faster than she usually did.The clock near the bed was becoming rude.

Freya matched women bag with the morning coat, the press seat, and the sidewalk waiting outside.Lorelai cared about the way it would look beside her notebook.Freya cared more about whether the strap would behave after three venues and too many stairs.

“That one,”Freya said, pointing at the black style.

“You really dislike the brown one.”

“I don’t dislike it.I dislike it with you today.”

    “That sounds personal.”

“It is personal. That blouse is involved.”

Lorelai kept the page open for another few seconds. The black choice had a cleaner line. The brown choice looked richer, but also heavier, like it belonged to a different version of the day.Maybe an appointment.Maybe a lunch with someone who used the word “strategy” too often.

Freya found the missing hairpin under a receipt and held it up like evidence.“Can we go now?”

    Lorelai closed the laptop.“Yes.”

    “Say that again,but stand up.”

Lorelai stood, picked up the black bag,and checked the room in the usual useless way people do when they know they are forgetting something. She was not forgetting anything. Her badge was around her neck. Her notebook was inside. The brown bag stayed on the chair, looking a little offended.

    Freya opened the door first.

    “After you,”Lorelai said.

    “No.You’ll turn back for something.”

Freya was right again, which Lorelai planned to ignore.

    5.Street Style Outside the Venue

The sidewalk outside the venue was already crowded, though the doors had not opened properly.Cars came too close to one another.Assistants tried to pass through gaps that were not really gaps.A photographer crouched near the curb and nearly got stepped on by a woman in pointed boots.

Lorelai liked this part more than the official entrance. The best outfits were usually caught before people remembered to perform.A coat slipped.A hand searched for a phone.A scarf blew into someone’s face and ruined the serious expression she had been holding since the car door opened.

Her bag stayed against her side, not stiff, not too neat.On the crowded pavement, with women bag close at her side,Lorelai found her coat falling into a cleaner line.It helped when the shoes were starting to feel like a private mistake.

A photographer turned toward Lorelai. She was mid-sentence with Freya and did not stop. The camera clicked anyway. She heard it,but kept talking.

    Freya looked amused.“You got caught.”

    “I did not pose.”

    “That’s why it looked better.”

“You didn’t even see the photo.”

“I saw your face. You were pretending not to care.”

Lorelai wanted to deny it,but the doors opened and saved her.

Near the entrance,a guest in a pale grey coat stepped from a car and paused to adjust her sleeve. Her bag was glossy, small, and held low.The outfit worked, though Lorelai could not say why fast enough.

Freya could.“She stopped before too much happened.”

    “That’s your review?”

    “That is my generous review.”

Lorelai wrote it down on the back of the invitation because her notebook was still in the bag and the crowd had begun moving. She had already lost the cap from one pen.The day was barely started.

Freya’s phone buzzed again. She read the message and made a face.

    “Glove situation?” Lorelai asked.

    “Belt situation.Different tragedy.”

Then Freya disappeared through the side entrance, and Lorelai joined the press line.

    6.Notes From the Front Row

Inside, the show space was colder than the street and much darker than Lorelai expected. She found her seat and tried to place her bag beside her knee without hitting the person next to her.The seats were narrow in the way fashion shows always were,as if everyone had agreed that elegance required discomfort.

Before the lights changed, she watched the room.An editor two seats down checked her reflection in a phone screen.A buyer across the runway removed her sunglasses, then put them back on.A man in black kept leaning forward to greet people who did not look thrilled to be greeted.

Lorelai opened her notebook. The first line she wrote was bad.She crossed it out.The second was worse. She left it there because the lights were dropping.

The first look came out in a long coat. The second had a metallic skirt. The third carried a small black bag low in the hand, and Lorelai could almost see Freya’s backstage correction in the way it sat.Not too high. Not dropped. Not pretending to be casual, though of course it was planned.

Phones rose around her.She took one photo, mostly out of guilt, then went back to writing. She preferred notes because they caught the things cameras missed:someone shifting in the front row,the sound before applause, the way a strap behaved when a model turned too fast.

Halfway through the show, she stopped trying to name the trend. That always made everything dull. The better story was somewhere else.It was in the hotel room, the half argument over the brown bag,the missing gloves, the assistant in the elevator who looked as if she had slept for twenty minutes.

By the finale, her handwriting had become almost unreadable.Applause started early. The last model vanished, and people around her were already standing, checking phones, looking for the next place to be.

Lorelai stayed seated long enough to write one line at the bottom of the page. She did not know if it was unseful. It was just what she had.

Then someone stepped on her shoe while leaving the row,and the line suddenly felt less important.

    7.Freya Between Racks and Lights

After the finale, the backstage room filled again in a rush.Models came back through the curtain, handing off coats, shoes, gloves, and anything else that had to return to the right rack before it vanished into fashion-week fog.Someone asked for look eleven.Someone else said look eleven had just been there. That was never comforting.

Freya took a bag from a model and checked the tag before placing it back. She had learned not to trust memory in that room.Under the runway lights,a model held women bag low and easy;two minutes later,it still had to return to the right rack.

The senior stylist passed behind her.“Look fourteen worked.”

“The handle was wrong first,”Freya said.

    “But it worked.”

Freya accepted that as praise and moved on.

A glove turned up inside a shoe box.No one knew why.An assistant claimed the box had been empty before, which Freya believed and did not believe at the same time. She wrote the return number on a sheet that already had three different kinds of handwriting on it.

When the rack was finally in order, she stepped into the corridor. The air there felt less hot.Lorelai was leaning against a stack of transport cases with her notebook open on one knee.

“You’re using furniture that probably costs more than my rent,”Freya said.

    “I’m respecting it emotionally.”

Freya looked at her.“That means nothing.”

    “I know.”

Lorelai showed her a few lines.Freya read them, then shook her head.

    “Too tidy.”

    “You always say that.”

“You always write like people had time to think before speaking.”

    “That is rude.”

    “That is editing.”

Lorelai took the notebook back but did not argue. She knew Freya was right.Backstage ruined neat sentences. It also made the better ones possible.

Someone called Freya’s name from inside the room. She closed her eyes for one second.

“If this is about the glove again,I may leave the country.”

    But she went back in.

    8.The Outfit After Lunch

By early afternoon, the first version of the day had worn off.The street no longer had that cold morning bite.Lorelai’s blouse had creased where the press badge rubbed against it,and her feet had begun issuing formal complaints.

Freya met her between venues with a paper cup she had not had time to drink from.It was tea, probably. It had gone lukewarm.Freya drank it anyway and made a face.

    “You look less fresh,”she said.

    “Thank you.”

    “I didn’t say bad.”

    “That was generous.”

Freya glanced over the outfit.“The bag is still helping.”

Lorelai looked down. She had to admit it was true. The skirt had survived. The blouse had given up a little. The shoes were now enemies. But the bag still made the whole thing look intentional,or close to intentional, which was the best anyone could ask after several hours.

A guest walked past in a pale coat and silver shoes, holding a glossy small bag as if she had no idea people were looking at her. That was probably not true, but it worked.

Freya watched her go.“Good coat.Bad timing with the shoes.”

    “You are impossible.”

    “I am employed.”

The next venue opened late.People pretended to be surprised.A photographer dropped a lens cap,and an assistant picked it up without looking at him.Two editors greeted each other with the kind of kiss that did not quite touch skin.

Lorelai wrote a few more words on the back of an invitation. She had misplaced the pen cap again. She found it in her sleeve five minutes later and decided not to tell Freya.

The crowd moved forward in a slow push.Freya’s phone buzzed. Her face changed.

    “Bad?” Lorelai asked.

    “Missing belt.”

    “Again?”

    “Different belt.”

Then they both laughed because the alternative was taking the day seriously.

    9.When the Cameras Turn

The second venue had better light, and everyone knew it.Guests slowed near the entrance just slightly. Some checked their phones with the screen angled outward. Some looked past the cameras as if searching for a friend who did not exist.

Lorelai arrived from the press line at the same time Freya came out of the side door.Freya was talking before she reached her.

“If anyone asks,I never saw the belt.”

    “That sounds legally serious.”

    “It is emotionally serious.”

A car door opened behind them, and the cameras turned.Lorelai did not stop. When the cameras turned,Lorelai kept women bag near her side, and the whole outfit looked less tired than she felt.

    “Don’t look,”Freya said.

    “I’m not looking.”

    “You’re almost looking.”

“I’m thinking about how much I hate my shoes.”

    “That I believe.”

The photographers were probably aiming for the woman stepping out of the car anyway.Lorelai might end up at the edge of a frame:half a face, one sleeve, the bag,Freya mid-complaint.She liked that better than a planned photo.Edges were less embarrassing.

Inside, the room was darker than the first show.Lorelai sat farther back this time, which was fine. The back rows told different stories.A guest arrived late and tried to look purposeful.A woman in front of her kept touching her strap as if the bag no longer agreed with the outfit.A man beside the aisle took photos of everything except the runway.

Lorelai opened her notebook, but the first model came out before she wrote anything. She held the pen in her hand through three looks and forgot to use it.

    Sometimes that happened too.

    10.Freya’s Practical Glamour

Freya’s second backstage call was worse. The room was smaller, the labels had been taped too low again, and someone had placed a tray of drinks near the accessories table, which made Freya dislike them immediately.

    “Move that,”she said.

A young assistant looked up.“The drinks?”

    “Yes.The drinks.The entire threat.”

    The assistant moved them.

A dress needed pressing.A heel strap broke. The belt that had caused three messages turned out to be in a garment bag marked with the wrong name.Freya found it after ten minutes and did not celebrate. She had no time to enjoy being right.

The younger assistant from the first show appeared again, holding two choices.

    “For look five?”

    Freya looked once.“Smaller one.”

    “Because of the color?”

“Because the coat is already doing too much.”

The assistant looked at the coat again, and this time saw it.The larger choice made the whole look feel crowded. The smaller one let the model move without looking overloaded.

Freya did not mind teaching when the person actually listened. What she hated was when people used the word “glamorous” for anything shiny and inconvenient. She had spent too many hours watching beautiful things become annoying under real timing.A strap that slipped was not glamorous.A clasp that stuck was not glamorous.A bag that made a model change her walk was a problem.

The lineup started moving. The music rose. The first look went out.The second almost caught at the sleeve, but the model fixed it.The third carried well.Freya watched hands more than faces.Hands told on the styling.

By the time the final look left, she was already preparing for the returns. No one clapped backstage. They just reached for hangers.

    11.Two Careers,One Table

Lorelai and Freya met later in a hotel lobby that had turned into a waiting room for people pretending they were not waiting.Coats were thrown over chairs.Chargers ran under tables. There were invitation cards near half-empty glasses of water.

Lorelai had three pages of notes and one sentence she hated less than the others.Freya had a sore shoulder and no interest in opening her message thread for at least five minutes.

They ordered sparkling water because choosing food felt like another task.

“You write too neatly about messy things,”Freya said, stealing Lorelai’s pen.

    “I know.”

    “Do you?”

“I know after you say it three times.”

Freya wrote in the margin:bags matter because women keep moving.

Lorelai read it.“That sounds like something I’d cut and then regret cutting.”

    “Then don’t cut it.”

In her notes,Lorelai placed women bag inside the day’s smaller scenes:the hotel room, the sidewalk, the narrow seat, and the backstage returns. In Freya’s world,it had been held, returned, tagged, misplaced, found, and corrected half an inch before anyone outside could see it.

Freya took back the glass of water she had barely touched.“You can use that if you make it less dramatic.”

    “I will fail.”

    “I know.”

Outside, the sky had gone darker. The crowd passing the hotel looked different from the morning version.More tired.More expensive somehow.More honest around the feet.

Freya checked the time and groaned.“One more call.”

Lorelai closed her notebook.“One more show.”

Neither of them moved for another few seconds. Then Freya stood first, because she always did when work pulled at her.Lorelai followed more slowly and left the pen on the table.

Freya picked it up without looking and handed it back.

    12.After the Last Show

The last show ended after dark.Lorelai came out with sore feet,a full notebook, and the feeling that she had missed one useful sentence somewhere between the second venue and the hotel lobby.Freya appeared from a service entrance ten minutes later with her coat over one arm and her hair finally free of pins.

They walked without choosing a destination. The streetlights made the pavement look wet even where it was dry.Behind them, people were still calling cars, still posing, still talking as if the day had not worn them down.A photographer sat on a low wall and checked his camera with the face of someone who had seen too many coats.

Lorelai looked down at her outfit. The blouse was creased. The shoes had become unforgivable. The badge had twisted around her neck. But the bag still looked right.

Freya saw her looking.“I said black.”

    “You did.”

    “And you resisted.”

    “For dignity.”

    “For no reason.”

They stopped at the crossing. The light took too long.A driver honked at someone who did not care.

Lorelai thought about the article she would write later. She did not want to make the day sound smoother than it had been.It had not been smooth. It had been late doors, missing belts, good coats, bad coffee, lost pen caps, wrong shoes, and people trying to look untouched by all of it.

    “What’s your ending?” Freya asked.

    “I don’t have one.”

    “Good.Don’t force it.”

The light changed. They crossed with a group of guests heading toward another car, another dinner, another room where someone would pretend their feet did not hurt.

Halfway across,Lorelai remembered the line she had left in the notebook. She would probably cut it.Maybe she would keep half.

Freya bumped her shoulder lightly.“You’re writing in your head.”

    “I’m trying not to.”

    “Try harder.”

They kept walking. The next morning would start too early, and Freya would complain before breakfast again.Lorelai would choose the wrong shoes again,or nearly. She already knew that much.
